Montagne D’Ambre

DESCRIPTION

Montagne D'Ambre National Park is 35 kilometres south of Diego-Suarez and is a unique mix of volcanic massif and lush montane rainforest. This is one of the most visitor friendly parks in Madagascar with over 30 kilometres of paths which are on the whole fairly easy going. Walks range from just an hour to up to 6 hours taking in one or several of the three waterfalls, spectacular trees, six lakes and many rivers that run through the park.

As well as the scenery, the wildlife here is superb. Highlights include the habituated crowned and Sandford's brown lemur along with five other lemur species. There are also over 20 amphibian species and around 75 species of bird. Ringtailed mongoose are often spotted and, if you are lucky, the island's largest carnivore – the fosa. The tiny Brookesia chameleons, many frogs and butterflies make for a wonderfully diverse day or two exploring this park.

The town of Joffreville, a few kilometres from the park entrance, is where most people base themselves and although the town itself has little in the way of infrastructure, there are several good accommodation options here. Day trips to the red tsingy and sacred lakes are also possible.
