Kruger National Park

DESCRIPTION

The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa. Established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld, this national park of nearly 2 million hectares, SANParks - Kruger National Park is unrivalled in the diversity of its life forms and a world leader in advanced environmental management techniques and policies. Approximately half the Kruger National Park is in Mpumalanga.

Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals, and varying habitats from open plains to undulating hills dotted with baobabs. SANParks operate a series of rest camps that offer accommodation in basic bit comfortable thatched cottages, permanent tented and camp sites and are designed for the self drive visitor, with restaurant, shops, petrol "stations" and even a post office. These are an excellent option for the freer spirited safari goers or those on a budget and combine well with a couple of nights in the more luxurious private camps on provate concessions within the Park or in the private reserves along the eastern border.

The South African side of the Greater Kruger Park, merged with the unfenced private reserves, is already over 20,000sqkms but this will almost double as the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park which will straddle the borders of neighbouring Mozambique and Zimbabwe and this is already well under way to forming one of the largest protected areas in the world.
