ITINERARY IDEA

Day 1 - 2: Durban & Surrounds

Meal Basis: Bed & Breakfast

Just outside of Durban is the seaside resort town of Umhlanga Rocks. The tropical weather and lush vegetation make this an enticing holiday destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. It is the perfect location for ocean enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike, with great opportunities for diving, swimming, scuba diving, whale watching, dolphin viewing, deep sea fishing and kite boarding.

Day 3 - 4: Drakensberg Mountains & Midlands

Meal Basis: Full Board

An imposing wall of rock that rises to 3000m, creating untold inspiring views and hikes. Known to the Zulus as the Barrier of Spears and to the first European settlers as the Dragon's Mountains. The Ukhahlamba Drakensberg is 1 of 8 South African UNESCO World Heritage sites, uniquely being on for both its significance as a natural resource and for the heritage of the San Paintings. For 1000s of years they hosted the San people and they in turn left their record on the walls on numerous sandstone caves.

Today most of the Drakenberg is protected as a National Park and it is a major attraction for the lover of the outdoors.

Day 5 - 6: Drakensberg Mountains & Midlands

Meal Basis: Full Board

KZN is steeped in history and literally littered with battlefields; from the struggles of the Zulu Civil Wars, to their clashes with the Boers and the British and the two wars where South Africa’s white tribes fought against one another. The most well-known and well visited sites are those where the legendary Battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift took place on the same day, lodging the Zulus firmly at the top of great warrior nations. Not far from these battlefields are the famous Anglo-Boer War fields of Spioenkop, Colenso and the Siege of Ladysmith, which drew characters like Winston Churchill, Louis Botha and Mohandas Gandhi onto the same stage.

Day 7 - 11: Hluhluwe Game Reserve

Meal Basis: Full Board plus Activities

The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve is the jewel in the crown of the KwaZulu Natal game reserves. Proclaimed in 1895, it is also the oldest game reserve in Africa. Initially two separate reserves, they were joined to create a single 94 000-hectare reserve which is home to one fifth of the world's black and white rhino population. It was here that the internationally acclaimed Operation Rhino started in the 1960s, successfully capturing and relocating white rhino to havens within South Africa and abroad. As a result, this country's white rhino population is now 12 times the 1960 count of 500. Today Hluhluwe-Umfolozi is focusing its efforts on saving the endangered black rhino, whose number in Africa dwindled from 14 000 to a pitiful 2 550 in the 1990s. The Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve was the first reserve to introduce walking safaris and its Wilderness Trails are internationally renowned.

ABOUT KWA ZULU-NATAL

South Africa's Zulu Kingdom, KwaZulu Natal, is an increasingly popular destination. It is a unique blend of cultural diversity, sophistication and nature – as well as being home to the historic Battlefields of Isandlwana and Fugitive's Drift.

Flanked by the warm Indian Ocean, the region also has areas of vast, unspoiled beaches and coastline teeming with nature. In Maputaland, a great number of turtles inhabit the waters and breeds include the Leatherback, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, Green Turtle and Hawkbill. The Big 5 are all found in the province's Game Reserves, and the largest population of Black and White Rhino is also to be found here.

Between May & July the Sardine Run is in full swing. Millions of Sardines are heading north along the coastline, closely followed by Humpback and Southern Right whales, schools of sharks and a plethora of seabirds, all drawn to this annual fishy feast.
